After a lecture, when a student asked about power, Suzuki Roshi responded, “Don’t use it.”
Every relationship includes differing levels of power arising from personal or social endowments and experience, role, and external supports. However, due to our habits and preconceptions, our perceived inequalities can contribute to misplaced anger and resentment, barriers in the life of a relationship. The promise of Zen practice is that we can transform any barrier into a gateway to increased intimacy. How does practice help us negotiate a way of being together that is founded on equality?
